Shah Abbas I the Great built the square at the beginning of the 17th century,

the square is known for the Royal and the Sheykh Lotfollah mosque and also for the magnificent Portico of Qaysariyyeh and the 15th-century Timurid palace. The square is known as the Imam Square or Naghshe Jahan which means the illustration of the world.

the squaer is about 560 meter length by 160 meter width makes is about 89600 square meter. What makes this square so different from other squares, is the decoration and the three mounments which sits on the south and on both sides of the square.
